IP Rating vs NEMA Type: What an Enclosure Hardware RFQ Must Prove
An IP code, a NEMA Type designation and a component data-sheet claim answer different questions. The RFQ should identify the exact system claim, installed configuration and evidence the buyer must receive.

Can a Latch or Hardware Component Establish an IP or NEMA Rating?
IEC 60529 classifies degrees of protection provided by enclosures against access, solid foreign objects and water. ANSI/NEMA EN 10250 defines enclosure Type requirements for stated environmental conditions and includes considerations that do not map one-for-one to an IP code. A latch, hinge or handle data sheet does not automatically establish the rating of the completed enclosure.

Define the Claim Before Requesting Evidence
Use this table to separate a purchasing shorthand such as “IP66 latch” from the installed enclosure result that may actually be required.

IP Codes and NEMA Types Are Different Classification Systems
IEC 60529 provides the IP Code system. Its designation addresses defined protection against access to hazardous parts, solid foreign objects and water under the conditions in the standard. The letters and digits should be stated exactly; a general word such as weatherproof does not communicate the same test basis.
NEMA enclosure Types describe protection for electrical enclosures in stated indoor or outdoor conditions. NEMA materials explain that these Types may address environmental conditions beyond the two IP digits. That is why an RFQ should not convert an IP code into a NEMA Type by assumption or present the two labels as interchangeable.

Component Evidence Is Not the Same as an Enclosure Rating
A component manufacturer may publish test information for an exact latch or another access-hardware configuration. That information can help screen candidates, but it does not by itself prove the completed cabinet. The installed enclosure includes the door, frame, gasket, seams, cutouts, cable entries, hardware and assembly method.
The buyer should therefore state what has to carry the claim. If the end product needs a certified or tested enclosure configuration, request evidence covering that configuration and confirm whether changes to the listed hardware or installation are permitted.

Hardware Interfaces Can Change the Installed Result
A compression latch may help apply repeatable load to a gasket, but the necessary compression depends on the selected seal, door stiffness, latch spacing and frame geometry. A quarter-turn cam latch may provide closing action without the same controlled pull-up. The relevant function has to be stated before a supplier can compare parts.
Cutout size, anti-rotation features, exposed mounting holes, hinge alignment and handle penetrations can also affect an enclosure. Treat every opening and attachment as part of the controlled configuration rather than assuming that a catalog family name preserves a rating.
Match the Evidence Level to the Buyer Decision
Different projects require different records. Early concept screening may use a published data sheet. A controlled production release may require a supplier declaration, test report, listing record, certificate or customer-specific approval. The RFQ should name the required record instead of asking generally for “certification.”
Review the document scope as well as its title. Check the exact model, covered variants, issuing organization, test basis, status, date and installation limitations. A logo on a brochure is not a substitute for a record that identifies the product and scope.
Handle Modifications as a New Evidence Question
Changing a cutout, seal, fastener, material, coating or installation can move the delivered part outside the configuration represented by earlier evidence. A proposed equivalent should be compared against both mechanical fit and the documentation needed for the end product.
Ask the supplier to identify deviations before quotation and again before production approval. The buyer or responsible certification body should decide whether existing evidence still applies; the sourcing platform should not make that determination from a product photograph.

Not by label alone. Confirm that the evidence covers the exact latch, cutout, seal, panel, fasteners, orientation and installation conditions used in the completed enclosure, then follow the approval method required by the project.
Should every RFQ request a test report?
Not automatically. The evidence level should match the end-product, customer and regulatory approval process. State the exact record needed and when it must be supplied.
How should evidence be compared when a supplier proposes an equivalent latch?
Compare fit, operation, material, finish and required evidence. Ask the supplier to identify any difference that could affect the installed configuration or approval record.
